I picked up my new Z1000 today (2005pre-reg, matt metllic blue) at 3:30pm, and haven't stopped grinning since I got keys ;D Was planning on doing 200+ miles but ended up running round showing it off to people and only managed 101. A beautiful day, but hard work keeping the rpm down.
I'm trying to keep it mostly below 5000 for the first hundred miles which in top is about 70mph, but pretty sure I saw a ton while overtaking at least once. I'm pretty sure the odd burst of higher revs is, probably, not that bad for the engine while it's being run in.
The bike felt fine, if a little taller than I remember...but that might just because I rode about 200 miles yesterday to say goodbye to my XJ600 and was stiff and sore. Wow, the throttle is responsive! The only problem I had was that the front forks deep a bit more damping. On less than perfect roads the extra movement was causing me to move the throttle a little bit each time which made things a bit jerky in the lower gears. It's probably something I just need to get used to...like the bars. My last bike had drag bars on it and that meant I was leaned more forward. So I'm still getting used to the very upright position. Might even try a set of straighter bars on it at some point, but for now I think I'll leave it standard until I've put a thousand or so miles down.
Oh, and I had a scary incident with some jakey old c**t and his pikey dog. Going through town, just come south off of Glasgow Cross, and just in my peripheral vision I catch this dog running from the opposite side of the road. Realised it was going to end up infront of me so got on the brakes, then it changed direction, so off the brakes, steer, brake again, christ, thought I was going to hit it a drop the bike Stopped the bike as my mate Barry, behind me, pulled his clutch in and redlined his bike to scare the dog out the way.
We stopped at the lights that had now changed to red and this jakey c**t comes wandering over, pissed, dog lead hanging out his pocket, and starts mouthing off at Barry for revving his bike to scare the dog out the way. I thought Barry was going to kick the sh*t out the guy. As the lights changed and I pulled away I saw Barry pulling right into the kerb. I stalled as I thought he was getting off to fight him and was about to put the stand down when he was moving again. Turns out he was trying to kick the cu*t. We had to stop soon after to calm down. Definitly not a good idea to ride with that much adrenalin pumping!
If you've read all the way to here, well done. Didn't mean it to be so long but thought the story about the dog was interesting.
