If I close the throttle and pull in the clutch in top gear the engine stops. It doesn't do it in any other gear and runs perfectly otherwise. Any ideas ?

Someone suggested today that this may happen if you start the engine before the electronics have completed the diagnostic cycle. I don't normally wait for the sound and light show to end before I start mine.

It might seem a silly question but is your idle speed a little slow.
Have you tried a slightly higher tickover to see if it might help.
If it still happens then it could be an air leak on the throttle body.
Just past experience on cars (sorry bad word) but it might help.

Already tried the idle speed. The air leak sounds good but why only in top gear ? And wash your mouth out.

Thought about this a bit more. It started just after I serviced the bike which included balancing the injectors. If I had an air leak it would surely have shown up then. I also put a K&N air filter in this time round and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with increased air flow.
No mattter what you come up with you still run up against the question - why only in top gear?

In the manual it mentions the air filter. Check the air filter seal is seated properly. I noticed you put a k&n filter in.On my sv there was a rubber seal which needed to be removed before the new one would seat properly. Is there such a seal on the Z?.

Have you tried with the engine running just pulling the clutch in and clicking it into sixth without moving to see if it conks out without being under load? If it does still cut out then it wont be an air flo problem but maybe electrical. Then try for a bad earth on the engine. A jump lead from negative terminal on the battery to the engine and try again. It might be a bad connection which runs through the gears but not the final drive.(just a stab in the dark but you never know).

Believe it or not the bloody thing won't go up the gears sitting still with the engine stopped or running. I'll stop it in top when I'm out tomorrow and see what happens.

Tried it - no joy. Just to make this more irritating, if it's going at high revs in 6th and you pull in the clutch and shut the throttle the engine stops. If you do it again it keeps running.

My brother in law's 750 cuts out but normally when he stops at a junction/traffic lights ??
The bike ticks over just on 1000rpm - is it right ? Mine's slightly higher on the thou.

I always let my diagnostic cycle finish and tried this in top gear, mine doesn't cut out. Sounds electrical coz most bikes have a rev limiter connected to 1st, 2nd and 6th gear. Complicated elec set-up coz it goes through the neutral light switch, side-stand switch and clutch switch. To prove it's the electrics, disconnect the clutch switch altho this may mean it will start in gear without clutch pulled in.
