I would rate the front on mine as average and the back as a cross between a pogo stick and a jackhammer. This seems to be an endless topic over on the American website. Has anybody used a 636 shock on the back? Is it any better? Is it a straight swop? I'm fed up with sore nuts!

:oHi mate! Yeah I know the sore nuts feeling!!! I've just fitted an 04 I think zx636 rear shock and find it a bit better than before although Im still playing with the settings to improve things. The front needs some work too, and I'm thinking about some Hyperpro fork springs and relevant oil to help with the ride quality. I got the shock for £36 off e-bay so a bit of a bargain and its new so gets rid of the rusty old part!!! ;D

Was that a straight swop or did you need to do any alterations? Please let me know how you get on with the settings. I'm thinking along the same lines for the front . I think the backs so awful that it upsets the front so I want to get it sorted first.

Gotta say after weeks of fiddling and experimenting with different oil weights (and sound advice from a suspension specialist), I think I've got mine as good as it gets on standard suspension and I'm pleasantly surprised! Ended up mixing 25% 5w with 75% 10w putoline Hpx, stock kawasaki oil isnt that great (all makes of oil are different despite having the same rating so keep to the same make of oil) dropped forks in yokes by 6mm upped rear preload one notch to setting 3 result 15 quid well spent and some pretty well balanced handling for budget suspension!

750 mate, had a zx6r before that, the suspension was set up by a pro, so I was a little spoilt, noticed the difference with the z but now its pretty close!

Hi guys I've fitted the 04 ( I think ) zx636 rear shock which was a straight swap for the original item, but it seems to be too hard now and I'm thinking of getting it re-sprung for me and the bikes weight which should cost about £60 according to Maxton, also the front end is very wallowy and a re-spring and re-valve job to your needs will cost about £270. Having been riding fairly hard on the standard suspension for a while now I feel its time to get it sorted as its spoiling an otherwise fantastic bike! ;D

I was talking to a local dealer today and he showed me a hyperpro kit which has a front and rear spring for £169.00. He will fit the rear spring free if I bring the shock in. I don't want to be rude r1boy but what weight are you? It is pretty much Ok for a budget setup and I can stay with anything covered in plastic on the sunny days on which such pretty baubles are brought out (bitchy, I know). As soon as it gets bumpy it's all over.

Hi Marco, as you've probably guessed at 16 stone I dont give the suspension an easy time! But as my girlfreind bought me an Ohlins shock for my 98 R1 I now know what good suspension should feel like and am keen to work on the Z750 to make as good as I can without spending ohlins money! The front forks I feel need more than just springs as the damping leaves alot of room for improvement, but if anyone has any advice I'd be more than happy to swap ideas.

Got an ohlins shock and had it set up to match the 'budget' forks, result, the ride is pretty firm (I'm used to supermotos tho!) but nicely damped and the forks & shock do the same thing rather than fight against each other. I doubt I'll be able to afford to stick the Z1000/6R upside downies on but it would probably improve matters further.

r1boy I want to marry your girlfriend! I was up at the Northwest 200 over the weekend and carried a mate pillion round the campsite to get (more) beer. He is a big guy and its the first time anyones been on the back and also the first time I've felt the spring moving - maybe it was the beer. I'm going to look into this Hyperpro thing but I can't do anything for a while because I have rust problems (details on my other post) with the rear shock among other things.

better than that when i went to collect it (only round the corner ) he said £30 and it's brand new from kawasaki still in the box apparently he had a warranty claim as his battery leaked down the shock & swingarm, so they sent out replacements and all he did was wash the existing ones down to get the white residue off !!!!!! so surplus to requirements. If i get a chance at the wend i'll dab in and have a go. keep ya posted

ok swapped it over last nice night, piece o piss, jacked the bike up on axle stands, unbolted the old one, slipped the new one in. Only had to move the regulator about 5mm to the left to clear the top of the shock. Start to finish 20mins Tried it this am seems loads better, firmer but gotta do some tweaks. Anybody got settings for a 636 shock & 11 stone rider?
