Twice this week i have been riding home from work and coming up to a set of traffic lights, been changing down though gear box slowing up to turn left or right, the first time i was slowing down, and going from second in to first and went straight into neutral, i quickly knock into first and pulled off, but the second time i was turning left at a busy junction again second to first to turn it, and same thing neutral but this time she ran a bit wide and i put my foot down on the rear brake thinking it would slow me down while i get it into first, but it locked the rear up and the back end started snaking till i took my foot off the pedal, Christ i was only going about five mph. But you also have it in your mind every time you are changing down, will it or won't it! So the question is the gear selector on its way out and if so whats the cost of repair, full engine strip down? Just remembered! When i park up from first to put it into neutral she jumps into second, i thought there was a senor or some device to stop this happening when stationary

prob worth stripping down the shift lever and clean and lube the shafts and joints first and see if that makes a difference, as reguards the neutril finder , there is one, its a ball bearing affair that uses centrifugal forse to enable easy neutril find, it aint infallible as mine does it sometimes but with you going into neutril from first to second it might be causing a problem, you can test it as at a stand stil with engine off or running, and try and engage 2nd gear from neutril, even with engine running it should be very difficult if not impossibl to engage, it will only engage when gear box is turning over, ie, in first and rolling, then the ball bearings move out via centrfugal force and allow gear to move on shaft and engage... you can imagine if ball bearings are crudded or moving slow neutil might engage from first... anyways other than that selector drum might be worn or selector arm..both can be replaced from the slump so no engine out for that job... but like i said clean and lube lever arm mech. first and maybe an oil n filter change if it aint been done in a while.

Thanks for this, I have found when i pull up at work and go from first to neutral, it can go into second which it shouldn't, so as you say the ball bearing could be filled with crap etc, going to how to wait till i have a few days off and dry weather? i try and change the oil every month as i don't ride many miles for the motor to fully warm up, so turns the oil into white paste. thanks again for the help.
