As above I stumbled across this on you tube.... It looks like it's the "thing to do" on this engine type (this model the previous and other Kwaks that share the same bottom end) .... Essentially you remove the central clutch basket, drill random holes round the inner basket to get the oil to lubricate more thoroughly between the plates.... Just got mine back together but it's pissing down outside so not a full test yet but starting it in the garage and engaging the clutch it does feel loads better. If anyone wants more information I did take some photos but not a full teardown spread....
Apologies if I'm putting up some old news but it was new to me!

Stuff to note if you do this.... 1. You'll need a clutch holding tool. Not expensive but if anyone wants to borrow mine they can if they cover the postage but they're pretty cheap and handy to have... 2. You may need a rattle gun to get the central nut out initially.... I did so I can't say if you will or not.. Once the cover is off its a pretty standard affair to remove. 3. 5 bolts out then the cover off. 4. Take the plates out taking care to keep them in order. Right at the bottom there are two small discs... Make a note which way they come out. The one right at the back is flat. The next one is slightly concave. 5. Take the central bar out... Lay it out as it comes out. 6. Drill the central part of the basket. I've done randomly spaced holes with a drill that just goes in between. 7. Clean the basket thoroughly.! And reassemble. 8. A torque wrench will be needed to tighten the central nut. 100ft lbs 9. 9nm for the 5 clutch basket bolts. 10. 10nm for the clutch cover. Well worth the effort. Took me about 90 mins but I was taking my time...

Yep... Been out this morning to take back the wrong gasket.... Subtle but good differences...stuff I've noticed...
Obviously mines the oldest one and is supposed to suffer more than most... Now, before this mod I'd not noticed my clutch to be sticky or anything like that...
1. So, firstly it feels more "cushioned" as the clutch is engaged from change to change. 2. Not sure what anyone else's is like but if I pull the clutch in, in say, top gear and go down through I tend to have to blips the throttle and kind of semi engage the clutch. Don't have to do that any more.... Just go down through the box. 3. Easier to find neutral and the change in to, and out of it is softer.
Only been out once on it but that's my initial thoughts.

Have you noticed the mod has softened the clunk when selecting first gear , only I've noticed this on mine ... might be due to low miles at the moment though.

Yep - it has...well, for me anyway.....as i said the procedure of pulling it up to first and pushing it down to first is softer too....

Its worth it - its only the cost of a gasket and ironically i didnt even need that as when i stripped the clutch down, did the mod, went to put it back together and found the gasket was wrong (bugger) and thought, well ill fire it all back together to test and if it leaks then i can change it whenenver (dont have to drain the oil) as i can lean the bike over....but, its stayed sealed from what i can see (gonna go down into the car park later to check) but ive got the right gasket, now spare, anyway! winner winner chicken dinner....

I did this mod a few weeks ago, from new my clutch has rattled when disengaged, hard to get in gears as the clutch sticks and if in first gear and filtering pulling clutch in and out it would clunk constantly as it stuck then released..not good, a common fault on many gen 3 and 4s, should have been fixed by Kawasaki on a recall imo but they fitted a slipper clutch now so all solved for 2016 onward. when i drilled mine i did more holes than Comfy and i put a 10 thou flat on the clutch shaft and i tell you what its like night and day day now.. a pleasure to change gear.. when disassembled the plates were pretty dry which speaks volumes as to the amount of oil getting to them and they were stuck together. Anyways a defo must do fix if your clutch is sticking

Nice 1, its been a long winter and the Kawa has been off the road for a couple of months but back riding again now, just need a rear tread which i will fit next month. looking forward to seeing your new mods especially the wheels and what you think of the handling with the reduced unsprung weight . gonna be following you down the Nitron shock route soon as i get the slush fund up

I always find "another update/upgrade" I use mine all the year round so, now pretty well all of the updates are done it more...upkeep now....probably mid winter ill take the swing arm out and get it recoated...its in remarkably good condition. But, to keep it in that good condition requires and amount of recoating, stripping, cleaning etc etc...

Heh -trial end error my friend, trial and error....ive no formal training but ive got an active mind....i have to be doing something, have to be pulling things to pieces....im almost the same as you. Ive got hardly any family left (just my 2 brothers, one younger one older) and thats really about it...ironically my wifes family are really wide and extensive and all come from Wales, Bridgend and up in the valleys...!!

Looking forward to it now and to sorting my bike out now,been so stressed, worrying if I've done the right thing,to my bike,but I love Kawasaki's and enjoyed my 2008 I did so much to it,but after riding my friends 2014 back from Shrewsbury when he bought it,that was 110 miles realised,I wanted a newer 1... Shorter wheel base,felt tighter on bends and felt like the guy said to me when u ride it,iyour in the bike,not sat on the bike. Never looked back...
