people on the site with a gen 3 suffering from false neutral in 4th gear you should get it checked out as I have now no 4th gear. The bike goes into 4th but when you accelerate it catches but then when you go over 3000 rev's it rattles and makes a horrible noise like the chain is slipping on the cogs and there is no acceleration. Have called a Kawasaki dealer today and surprise they have never heard of this before and to strip the engine down it's going to cost me £955 for labour and then parts which was about £245 so in total £1200??
My bike is a 62 plate with 8000 miles.
Funny when you look on the internet there seems to be people out there with similar problem and Kawasaki no nothing !!!!!!!

I have my gen4 jump out of gear a couple of times in 4th but, that's when I'm quick shifting through....but, it was down to my mincy gearchange.....I tend to be "firm" with the gear change and its not done it for months....

Hey Baz - where abouts in the uk are you....may be able to help if you can do the legwork. My mate is an engine builder. Lives about a mile away from me (Bristol) is spoke to him about the possibility in the future of stripping my engine with a view to a refresh and to get the engine coated in something more durable he was more than happy do so. He works for himself from home (owns a gen4 like me) so may/probably will be happy to strip and rebuild your motor a fair bit cheaper....you'd have to get the motor out of your bike and get it to him/me - if you want to ill get in contact with him and see what he says...

Unfortunatly my gen 4 2015 Z1000 has a big prob with 4th gear popping in and out, the supposedly unbustable engine has only 10,000 miles on her and no real abuse .. looks loke the dogs have gone on 4th gear that keep it in have for some reason worn, im only guessing of course till i have her looked at but to say im gutted is an understatement, .. looks like we gonna have a good summer too ffs.... kinda strange really cos it goes in and out of gear nicely but under load it pops out then shoots straight back in.. bit like if u were reving and dip the clutch.. might take you up on the guy who rebuilds engines if you trust him when i get a diagnosis Comfy ... my biggest worry up here is getting the right person to strip the gear box out and repair it ..

Is yours out of warranty now??
If so then ill contact my mate. He's got a gen 4 too....as i say when i spoke to him about mine he was more than happy to rebuild it whenever i wanted to. Is yours a keeper....if it is then id definately suggest getting the engine recoated. It wont matter what gets on it then, salt, mud whatever can be jetwashed off. Its what ill be doing.
Thats really surprising. Ive had my QS on there for ages and i use it quite often. Id have thought if anyone (on here) was going to get an engine problem it was going to be me!!!!
Another thing to factor in, is, while its apart the replacement of other stuff, new shell's, big ends, all gearbox bearings - while its apart get as much stuff done as possible (the reason i ask if its a keeper). Im currently at this point with my hypermotard....the actuall damaged parts, the crank, shells bearings and rods only came to 250 quid, but it looks like the total bill is going to be north of 2.5k and part of that is 700 quid was to get the engine, pipes and other bits and pieces coated. Im pretty sure the bill for the spares to rebuild it is going to be round the 800 mark. Again one of the reasons is that i could have used all the existing bearings but you'd be stupid not to replace while youve got the chance. The main bearings on the hyper while they were ok they were a known failure point so Ducati change the design to a split bearing, i think those 2 bearings on their own are almost 200 quid....it mounts up...id be fucked if the wife found out...!
If you do....ya gotta get a build thread running - that would be brilliant to see...

Tnx for reply... Yep it's out if warranty and only done 10.000 miles so just loosened up ..havnt decided now if it's gonna be a keeper but when I get it fixed I will get the gears undercut. Need to get a good diagnosis first.. dropped oil and it's clean as a whistle ..no bits of metal .. Just strange that it drops out and drops straight back in ... mm o well onwards and upwards..maybe peeps might think twice about after market quick shifters .. but to be fair only had a few miss gears with it and my motor gets quality synthetic and filter every 3000 miles..

I dont think the QS is the issue (unless you had the timing monumentally out!!)- im at 13k now and use mine quite often. The bottom end is a known workhorse and also reliable (one of the reasons i went for one). Its been used on quite a few Kwaks over the years. I did text him yesterday - said he's snowed under right now but, when are you thinking of pulling the motor (by the time you do that) then he'll probably have space and, if he can give me a time when he's free you can schedule a bit more. One of the things he said that he'd do to mine is do some head work too (polishing and porting) - im definately up for that...!

hey thanks, will be investigation further before i pull the engine but if worst comes to worst it wont be till around October. have pulled the clutch tonight to give it a good going over and one of the 5 spring stays on the inner clutch basket is sheared off so will be repairing that to rule it out before i go further... will update when i can

Hi Rob - saw your video go up earlier in the week ( i was at the TT) so not got time to watch....going to skyve off this afternoon from work so ill take a look then...if its any consolation just for a sheer lack of communication im at 2.7k for the hypermotard rebuild...

2.5 k.. i feel your pain things are running pretty smoothly with the strip down, latest vid up shows a bent and worn fork so one shaft and 2 forks are gonna be replaced and fitted and then i will suck it and see.. when you view the tight fit between the drum and fork and gears it makes you wonder how the hell it jumps out if its fully engaged, .. anyways bet you had a great time at the TT,

Ah - so youve managed to strip the engine yourself? brilliant! like to see a vid of that (still not looked at the other one yet)
Yeah - TT was amazing - it was literally a split second decision to take the zed or my rsv4 (took the rsv4 again as my mate was on his RC8R) he sold his dorsoduro a couple of weeks ago...had he taken that i would have taken the zed. Next year ill not be taking the rsv4. Itll be either the zed or the hyper but id hazzard the zed as its way more comfortable.!
Are you going to do any head tuning while its apart?? polish the exhaust ports out etc etc...?

only stripped the sump off at mo to get at the gear drum and forks, if this fails it will be a total strip down but doubt will be doing any other engine work, and iffing and butting on an MT10 in the new year.
