I'm doing my first track day in April all being well, and it's in Spain so hopefully temperatures will be something like a coolish Summer's day in good old Blighty. Any thoughts on tire choice ? Many thanks, Fletch PS - least if I bin it I'll be in a nice place.

Dunno about on the Z but on my ZX9R ive used 014's and pilot sports with no probs(llandow, silverstone and donnington). Had 014's on the Z for my visit to the 'ring and they did fine there. Hope that helps a bit.....got 012's on the Z at the mo and theyre fine even in this shit weather

I've done a couple of track days with the OE BT-012's and my last one was with Pirelli Diablos (regular diablos) and the diablos were MUCH better than the BT-012's IMO.
If I were buying tyres now, I'd either go with diablos again or may consider the new Michelin Pilot Road 2's. These are described as Sport Touring tyres (good mileage and wet grip) with slightly softer compound at the edges for more grip when you need it - sounds interesting..

I have tried many diffent tyres on mine, from the original fitment i went to the BT010, then on to D208, then to Diablo Corsa`s. All were quite good, especially the Corsas. I am now running with Supercorsa`s......hell are they confidence inspiring, even on those cold wet days you still have loads a grip.
I must admit though that I cant tell you what sort of mileage you can expect from these. I have only had em on for about a thousand miles and the rear is already starting to square off (not bad enuff to notice yet).
But if you look on ebay you can get a set that have done 1 trackday for about £70-80 with a good 4mm or so of tread on em. Not too bad for experimenting I thought.
Cheers
Mark

Don't know about on the zed, but I have done trackdays on most of my road bikes and have always found the Pirelli supercorsa are brill. I now use them on my trackbike and they are awesome. As the tyre sizes on my zed are the same as my current trackbike, I'll be taking the zed on track at Silverstone very soon and will be using the supercorsas

Any tyre will do, but if you want to get the best from your bike a road tyre like the bt014 will soon give up. They are a brilliant road tyre and yes they "manage" a track session but you really need a dedicated track tyre. Pirelli Dragon super corsas work a treat.

I agree but 90% of my riding is on the road hence my thoughts Any tyre will do, but if you want to get the best from your bike a road tyre like the bt014 will soon give up. I understand your concerns, but how many miles do rack up on your bike?
I have put on the supercorsa`s and I use mine everyday of the year....."not a sensible choice if I am looking for longetivity", but for the price i paid from ebay for a used pair (last lot cost me £65 incl. carriage) then I can afford to get 1500 - 2000 miles for a set and replace em with the same and technically I have paid the same price as a set of harder compound with longer lasting capabilities.
It does really boil down to personal pref but I always go for better grip and feedback than longetivity and cost. (bearing in mind I have racked up 25k miles on mine)!
cheers

Know exactly what you mean by patterns ;D. I did a similar thing to you when I had my 9r and was doing 25k miles a year, lived on part worn tyres as I was going thru a rear every 5 weeks mileage wise Hi, As mentioned it is all down to personal choice, and how much wonga you got in yer wallet!!!
