In my opinion, I found fitting the zx10r shock with the Z1000 Spring the best option. From memory, it fitted straight on at the top, and at the bottom I used the bush and spacer from the Z1000 shock. Do a search on ZX10R Shock, there are many posts about the swap. Thanks, Hamish

I've an 05 636 unit and it needed the bottom bush and the two seals from the 636 about £15 from from Cradleigh Kawasaki. I couldn't get anywhere near the correct static sag with the standard 636 spring so I put a Hyperpro one in and it's excellent now.

I've looked at my zx10 one and can't see how to remove it - though being half cut probably doesn't help

Andy, I took both shocks to K-Teck in Coalville and they swapped the spring over for nothing. They also had to use another part of the Z1000 shock, but it is much better as the spring is better suited to the Zed's weight.

You can't do it yourself you need a big gadget to to compress the spring.

Looks like its starting to be more hassle than its worth!

Marco,
I notice you swapped the springs on your 636 shock from the 636 to the z1000 one. Just wondering If I need to do it.
Was your static sag problem with you on the bike or just the bike alone? If with you on the bike, how much do you weigh (bit personal I know) as I am 14 stone, and if I can get away with just swapping the shocks whole I want to go that way.
What year is your 636 shock?
Also thinking I might need to do something on my C1 636 front end, stiffer springs oil etc.
Jezz

Sorry it took so long to reply. I am 13 1/2 stone. The sag was wrong with me on or off the bike.
The shock is 05 and my bike is an 05 Z750. Things might be a bit different on the thou.

Well I've done it!
I bought a spring compressor from Halfords £20. (you need to be careful because they are meant for car springs, but it still works.)
636 Shock 1) Slacken off the C rings on the top of the shock. 2) Hook in the spring compressor over as many of the coils as possible. (comes as two pieces - put them on the spring opposite each other) Then tighten the compressors down till the spring is loose. 3) unhook the two aluminium blocks (shaped like 1/2 a cup) 4) slide off the retaining disc and plastic tube. 5) CAREFULLY loosen off the spring compressors and slide off the spring.
Z1000 Shock. AS ABOVE except the 1/2 cups are just 1/2 discs.
The Z1000 spring has more coils in it than the 636 spring for the same length - this is what gives it a higher load rating.
Assembly of z1000 spring onto 636 shock: 1) set the C rings to the correct preload (starting point 10mm of thread showing at the top) 2) Slide on the spring (be careful as it has a top and a bottom) 3) Slide on the plastic tube (the Z1000 and 636 tubes are the same so it doesnt matter which) You will know if you have the spring the right way round at this point because the black plastic tube will only fit inside the spring at one end. 4) Put the metal retainer on next. 5) Now slide in the two 1/2 DISCS FROM THE Z1000 shock (I could not get the spring to compress enough to use the 1/2 cups from the 636) 6) Carefully loosen off the spring compressors.
JOB DONE now refit the shock to the bike!
