I recently purchased a 03 z1000 privately. I started to notice a knocking coming from the front. Turns out the left side mounting on the cylinder head has broken. Could this be fixed by welding or would it require a new head?

You probably could have it welded as I dont think there is anything unique about the engine that prevents it, but the mounting will be under a lot of stress so I'm unsure if it would hold....best speak to the experts. Best bet would be a new cylinder head I think.

Don't worry chuggabeer, there's no reason why this can't be fixed. You need to find a good TIG welder who knows what their doing and they'll soon have it mended. Ask them about isolating the bikes electrical system to prevent damaging the ECU. I understand your worry preludedragon, but a good weld is as strong as the material your welding, after all an aluminium frame is held together by weld Good luck with it. Matt.

The engine is mounted by a bracket which is bolted via 2 bolts to the frame and another bolt through this bracket through the engine into a nut!
You can clearly see the triangular bracket on both sides of the bike, ( 3 x bolts, 2 top and 1 bottom) the bottom bolt goes through the hole in the block and you will find two locating lugs on the engine behind the radiator, these lugs hold a nut which the engine mounting bolt goes into.
Are you sure it is the mounting thats broken and not the bolt?
The reason I highlight this is because when I put on some R&G Crash protectors, I went to remove the Engine mounting Bolt and it sheared clean off! upon inspection it was as rotten and corroded as hell, over time it would have failed by itself!!!!!
Cheers
Mark
