Hi All, I'm after some advice for improving the brakes on my 'thou. Currently they are totally standard and I'm not happy with the feel of them. I think they actually work OK, it's just that they lack initial bite and the lever needs a good pull. Is the first step to change the lines? Or should I try different pads first, and what pads are recommended?

Convert the front end using 636 forks and brakes, best plan now and go all the way, do not waste your cash trying other options, you will not regret it. check out the posts on the subject

I know that you're right - but unfortunately the budget won't allow it. I need to make the best improvements I can, but for the least cash.

I'd go for the lines first. They will give you the biggest change. Standard lines are rubber and expand under pressure reducing the force on the pistons. The older the lines, the softer the rubber and the more they will expand. Even on a brand new bike the lines can be up to 3 months old when they build the bike! Then the bike can be anything up to 6 months old before you get your paws on it! So what you have is a 'brand new' bike that is made up of parts anything up to 9 months old!!! Then if you still need improvement go for pads and then discs. OEMs standard discs use a high content of chromium to stop them rusting - this reduces the heat absorption proporties of the steel making them less good at stopping (compared to say cast iron) aftermarket discs (like Galfer, Brembo etc) use a much lower chromium content - making them more likely to rust, but much better at absorbing heat and stopping the bike. Hope this helps! ;D

Many thanks Jezz, that's great. I'll get some braided lines first. ;D
Hope you're enjoying the brilliant weather that we're having in the west country ;D

Hi, i changed the hoses which made an improvement, but they werent still good enough. I bleed them twice with a mighty vac but they still werent right so i brought some crg levers and now they are great. It was almost as if i had the wrong brake lever on it originally. Hope it goes well for you
