Got to depend on your budget really, I went for progressive springs (you can get Hagon/Hyperpro/Ohlins etc) and different weight oil and different airgap. Alternatives include cartridge emulators, and Matris Fork cartridges. Plenty of riders have swapped out for ZX6 front ends but that is quite a money pit you are looking into, and means sourcing parts like Z1000 yokes, so prepare for a loooong wait til they come available secondhand.

I went the Hyperpro route and it was a big improvement. To my way of thinking if you are going to throw big money at something like this you might as well buy a different bike, specifically one that actually has something that can be described as suspension in the first place.

I put hyperpro in my Z1000 and I kinda agree with marco on this.
To get something that handles a lot better, you're better off starting somewhere else...

Hagon progressives meself with a second hand ZX6RR rear shock, not a major outlay but a massive improvement over the stock 'suspension'

I have the Hyperpro springs in the front and a 636 shock with a Hyperpro spring on the back. As you say a huge improvement for about £220 all in. Now I can feel the swinging arm flexing when I'm pushing it but where do you stop ? Tyre wear has gone up a fair bit because you can go so much harder.
