I have the option of buying an '06 ZX10r standard rear shock for my Z1000, but there are no linkage bits available with it. Does anyone know what I would need to do to get this to fit my Z1000 ? Many thanks, Mike

Mike, I have a shock from an 05 ZX10R on my Z1000 - and I fitted just the shock itself.
There is a problem in that the bottom bracket on the Z1000 is slightly wider than the U shaped base of the shock.
You can either grind the shock bigger, or make the linkage and buch inside) smaller - but something needs to give.
You may be able to buy a shorter bush that fits with no mods - maybe someone else can help with that.

Many thanks, Mike hi Mike the parts you need are 1 sleeve part no 42036-1258 which is 2 mm shorter, 2 no seal's /92049-1225 ,i only used one and one original seal which i found to be a tight enough fit on my bike just try it and See i also used a slightly shorter bolt or get the zx one 92153-0663 +nut 92210-1139 or you could just use washers .

Great, thanks for your help guys !
I can now buy a shock, safe in the knowledge that I won't make a complete b@llocks of the whole thing !!!
Probably.
Cheers,
Fletch

I think I paid £80 for mine, including the postage. That was for a mint condition low mileage one, and it's worth every penny.

Just bought one off ebay for £90. Came off an 06 with zero miles as they were building a race bike. Happy days.

Fitted 06 zx10r shock a few days ago but when I tried to set the static sag (which should ideally be about 30mm.) I could only get it down to 40mm. with full preload. As standard it had over 50mm. This seems to suggest the 10r spring is initally too weak to support the 30kg heavier z1000. Would it be better to fit the z1000 spring ? Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? Ps. I weigh 12st.9lbs.

I am thinking about fitting the Z spring to my shock to see how it feels (not being the lightest of riders ;D) Planning to have Crescents dyno it first and one of their guys is going to have a look at my suspension Will let you know what happens.

Reading the last couple of replies to the fitting of zx10r shocks, are you know saying they are not as good as they were thought to be. Im still sitting with mine in the garage, been too busy with the old CBR to do anything with the Z. Just dont fancy fitting the standard zx shock if its still not very good.

Hi Noddy I would still fit the ZX10 shocker ,it is better than the standard shock any day .The problem with different bike's /riders is huge .not only in weights /tyres ,riding styles but on what roads and speed you travel at .I found theZX10 shocker perfect on fast smooth A roads well in to triple figures but I tend to use the Yorkshire moors a lot grate roads but can sometimes get very bumpy which I found to hard to ride fast on .I also couldn't get the ride height right so i went for the K-tech mods on my shocker .

I take it then most people are riding around with the wrong sag. I've not seen this mentioned before, even on that other Z forum ( the mainly American one )

Yer possibly so but it might not bother some rider's as much. One thing I have noticed about using shocks of different bikes ,is the different spring rates for different year models of the same bike and when we buy them second hand you can't be sure of what you are getting (I was told mine was an 05 shock only to find out it was an 04 ). At the end of the day you can only set your bike up to your own measurements /preferences .One thing I do know after the first month of owning the Z in standard form I was looking to get shut of it after having two big scary moments on the moor's on corners I can take with ease on my CB 500 at a lot faster speed .But now after my mods I think it will be with me for some time ;D
