Help guys I can get first and neutral but it wont shift into second the bike is a 2007 Z1000B7F with just 12500 miles on clock. pulled away from outside my house not quickly changed to second bit of a clunk changed down to turn right back to first tried to get second would not select it then jumped into second got the rest of the gears changed down to first again to make another right turn could get second and not been able to get it since. It's got a full service history and has been well looked after. Any ideas and is this a problem Z1000 are known for how easy or difficult is the fix. Cheers guys

does it go into the other gears easily just 2nd that it wont engage? is the clutch adjusted and functioning correctly, worst case senario, if the selector is bust it can be changed by dropping the sump, if its a gear problem the engine has to come out and be split..

The only gear I can get is first it wont go up the box from neutral. The clutch seems ok it doesn't clunk into first and pulls away smoothly just wont change up no funny rattles or juddering. It's booked in to Corby Kawasaki 3rd june they think it may be an easy fix or bang goes the Mrs new kitchen. Did 100miles last thursday sweet as took it out yesterday 100mtrs up the road this happened.

If you can get the motor out of the bike (and the design is like ours) you "should" be able to turn the motor upside down, drop the sump. then the bottom half of the engine (taking all the stuff off around the sides - clutch etc etc) and get to the gear box...

Thanks for the replys, not much I wont/can't do on a bike but a gear box! I don't have a good history with trying to repair gear box's cars or bikes. So going to bite the bullit and hand over my hard earned cash to get it repaired.

Yeah - but - youll save a shed load of cash if you at least take the motor out and hand that over to them....!

Not got room in the garage for another bike in bits I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 2004 Z750 34K on it regular serviced strong motor but never seen a bucket of soapy water for a good few years. Bought it as a winter project last autumn rode it a few times before stripping it liked it. hence why I swapped my Yam FZ1 gen2 for the Z1000 same as the 750 but with more smiles per miles. About £600 labour plus parts depending on what they find, they are a decent bike dealers and not rip off artists like some.

i will add the kawasakis have a neutral finder system that prevents the engagement of 2nd gear when the motor is not running, its a ball bearing affair that relies on centrfugal force .. this might be jammed or a problem, or its prob the shift forks or shift drum,.. you can get at the forks and the mechanism by dropping the exhaust off and dropping the sump off with the engine insitu , the forks and shift drum can then be dropped out and examined and also the neutril finder bearing checked.. i did a full engine out oand replaced the box a few years ago and this vid i made off my channel might help you out shift drum and forks link

I have noticed on my z1000, when i pull up to a stop in first and standing still, lifting gear lever to pop it in to neutral it goes into second, i then have to softly tap it down into neutral. bit of a hit and miss as you go back down into first, if i turn the engine off then tap it in to neutral goes no problem.
But i am having clutch problems now, as i wrote in another post.

Got my bike back it wouldn't repeat the fault for the kawasaki dealers but the linkage was stiff so they stripped cleaned and greased that and took the bike out for test ride it's perfect now princely sum of £84 bargin if only for peace of mind. Cheers for the help gents
