I know it's been quiet on here for a while, but just incase someone is out there... I have just ordered a new Z1000R performance edition for delivery May 1st. Can anyone tell me if a Puig touring version screen is worth fitting to deflect some 'wind blast'? Also I have heard that the engine can feel "a bit buzzy" at motorway speeds, would a larger front sprocket help it to feel more relaxed and to improve fuel economy at higher touring speeds? I notice that 16T and 17T are available, the standard size is a 15 tooth, I believe. Or do I owe the bike an apology for being picky?

Answering the questions but these are purely opinion....
Puig screen: Ive never had a screen myself - ive done some pretty good distances (3-400 miles in a day) - ive never needed one...and ive spent most of those miles sat on the motorway...plus i think over sized screens look a bit lame...almost like a peacock...but thats me...ruins the look of the bike - or most bikes for that matter...
Buzzy at motorway speeds: Its a short ratio box so itll always rev a little high...kind of like an R6 (ive had one and the gearbox ratios almost feel the same) - but having said that itll go from 30mph to 155 in the same gear...again, to me, not an issue as that "buzziness" gives it incredible acceleration in top gear whereas most bikes - you have to change down (ive got an rsv4 factory also and have to do just that)
Fuel economy: Get a full system on it and get it on the dyno...once its been mapped itll go faster, have an even greasier smooth throttle and use less fuel - i average around 45 - 50mpg sometimes more on motorway runs.... if you want ill list the actual gains from an ecu flash but theyre on here (i did do a thread when i had mine done)
Its a great bike standard but mega when you throw a bit of cash at them...

O.K. thanks for that Comfy, I take delivery on the 1st of May, and once it's run in I'll decide on the necessity of the screen and gearing. I doubt that I will go to the extent, or rather expense, of a full exhaust system and fuel map unless I can't live with it as it is [or will be].

No Prob - but, this is the thing....i think im old school.....for me my bike has to be absolutely exactly set up the way i want it...its brand new so, i understand youll probably not want to mess with it...mine was still under warranty when i got mine but, it was standard for....about a day - i pulled mine to bits the very next day.. All i can say is...if you think its good now (when you ride it) then add 20% to the performance (through the range) and youll be where mine is at...

Me too, I need to be happy with the way it performs, in particular handling and power delivery initially, then take it from there. So many times in the past I've got a bike just the way I want it, then end up selling it. This time I hope I have chosen something that I will be mostly happy with as it is without spending a fortune on it after the purchase price, I don't have loads of spare cash.

Thats where im at with the zed....i loved the thing riding it home the day i bought it. I sold my 2nd hypermotard to get it (wishing id never sold the hyper cos i loved it). Riding it home i did think "this one im keeping..."
The way i see it the longer i keep it and the more trick stuff i put on it the more it becomes worth the money spent on it...
I used to be like that (getting them the way i wanted them) and then flogging them....so, ive stopped doing just that....
My rsv4 factory is 8 years old and still with me The zed 5 years ago The Hyper 3 years ago My KTM525 supermoto built from and enduro 4 years ago...
Dont want to get rid of any of them...totally happy with them..
With regards to the cost (of what youve laid out) yep...but, theres a load of stuff you can do to them....just take it steady with the upgrades, but, there are some that kinda have to be done at the same time ie....k&n, full system and ecu flash (you need to either plug the pair system or, buy the block off kit before it goes on the dyno) - they all go together.

OK, just over another 2 weeks to go before I pick up my new Z1000R, this is turning into the longest 6 weeks ever [since I ordered it] I am itching to ride it and get it run in, then decide on potential mods. In the meantime, although I am still riding 2 of my other bikes the anticipation of a new bike is taking over my every thought. Roll on May!
