Can anybody do me a favour and test the voltage going into the battery at idle. I ask because my lovely heated grips keep on switching off at idle (they are oxford hot grips and designed to protect the battery) and it's driving me mad I just need to check really whether it's down to the battery not holding enough charge to start with (12.2v only 2 years old) or the rectifier not letting enough juice through at idle (although it's fine when revving) or the oxford controller is just too sensitive. Any help or advice appreciated guys Cheers

I would say its the oxford controller switching off to preserve the battery....
However, i shall dig my multimeter out, fart about with the wires till I get it to work and fuse the battery on my bike...................

thanks for that Andy, i think it is the controller, but it's a pain that it's set so sensitive that it switches off as soon as the revs drop to tick over. At least with the old one you didn't have any problems, apart from leaving them on and letting the battery go flat

I have oxford heated grips on my bike and had to dis-connect them as they were draining my battery - got left stranded a couple of times. I had the old style controller on mine, and its a real s*****r because they are the second controller that I had - the switch went on the first one so I couldn't turn them on, oxford were very good and replaced them under warranty but the second ones eventually gave up and although I could press the button to turn them off (the LED would go out) they were still leaking current (grips would stay warm) and drain my battery. Oxford products generally give good service but I'm not impressed with their products! I recommend you chuck 'em in the bin and by some Motrax ones - thats what I'm gonna do!

GF has really good heated gloves...Klan ones...cost £100 but are fab...she has them on her Honda 250 Foresight scooter atm and work great. Look here and you will see the gloves...they do full heated clothing too! www.brmc.co.uk/Klan%20heated%20clothing.htm

thanks guys, i'll have a look at some of those alternatives. I don't have a problem with the grips themselves when they are on they work well it's just the switching off at tick over that s pi***ng me off, the old controller worked a treat, the new ones shite!!!!

Got Oxford heated grips myself, run at all 4 heat settings at idle, switch off by themselves when the bikes not running, if I forget to switch them off, can't say enough about them.......keep my hands warm as well! Brilliant! You guys must have bought some friday afternoon ones?

planemaker any chance of getting a voltage reading at idle, as i'm not sure if my battery is on the way out. Although it does start perfectly! The grips are brill loads of heat just annoyed as hell that they switch off at idle. I emailed oxford customer support and got the usual check this check that make sure that they are connected directly to the battery malarky. (even though i had explained that allready) so no joy there. Just need to be sure which bit in the loop is the weak link and get it changed.

thanks for that, i have had a response from oxford this morning, if i send the controller over to them they will test it out to see if it's faulty. So i will be taking it off on monday and leaving it to the mercy of the RM !! (and at christmas time!!!!!!!!!!!) not sure how long it will take em to test but i bet it will leave me with cold hands for a few weeks... brrrrrrr...

Twintin When ticking over, my bike is pushing out just over 12 volts, running upto just over 13 volts when I rev it to 3-4 thousand revs! Hope this helps you? I have a 2004 Zed and the battery has been on it from new, just about 3 and a half years old! I have a datatool alarm, which is on all the time when the bikes not being used, and I don't use the bike every day in the winter, so it's lasting quite well!

thanks for that mines kicking out about the same, but over the weekend my battery died so it looks like this is a good starting point!!!! i'll get a new one today and see how that goes. I have had an email from oxford asking me to send the controller back for testing so if the new battery doesn't work i'll do that.
